Calcium thioglycolate is a white crystalline powder, soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol. It has a special smell of mercapto compounds and appears red when exposed to metal ions such as iron and copper.
Calcium thioglycolate (1:1) is used as a hair remover for skin or leather. Calcium thioglycolate is the main depilatory agent today. It reduces the mechanical strength of hair by destroying disulfide bonds and polypeptides in the hair structure and its reduction effect in alkaline conditions. Depending on the amount used, it can transform hair from softness to breakage and has been widely used in perming and hair removal cosmetics.
