3-Trifluoromethylphenylacetonitrile is a thionyl derivative that has been shown to have anticancer activity. It can be found in wastewater and has been shown to be present in cancer cells. The anticancer effect of 3-Trifluoromethylphenylacetonitrile was investigated using voltammetry on cancer cells. This study showed that the compound inhibits cancer cell growth, but does not affect normal cells. 3-Trifluoromethylphenylacetonitrile has also been shown to inhibit the transfer of chloride ions from inside the cell to the outside, which leads to an accumulation of chloride ions inside the cell and an increase in intracellular pH, leading to apoptosis.
