Ammonium triphosphate is a chemical compound that is used as a catalyst in the polymerization of naphthalene with deionized water and an organic solvent. Ammonium triphosphate is synthesized by reacting sodium carbonate with ammonia and phosphoric acid. The reaction system consists of a mixture of these three chemicals, which produces an orthophosphoric acid and ammonium phosphate solution.
The reactants are mixed in a closed container at elevated temperatures, initiating the chemical reactions and creating ammonium triphosphate. The reaction product is then cooled to room temperature for storage purposes. Ammonium triphosphate can be used as a catalyst in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics, nitrocellulose, or other polymers that require high temperature polymerization reactions.
Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is the main variety of phosphorus-based flame retardants. It is used in fire extinguishing agents, flame-retardant coatings, and flame-retardant polymer materials. It is an upgraded product of halogen-based flame retardants.
