1. An iron alloy composed of silicon and iron with a silicon content in the range of 8.0% to 95.0%. Ferrosilicon containing about 50% silicon is mainly used to add silicon when melting iron in cupola furnaces; ferrosilicon containing about 75% silicon is commonly used. It is used as an inoculant and inking agent for cast iron, a deoxidizer and a silicon-increasing material for steelmaking; the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is very large, and it is easy to synthesize silica, so ferrosilicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. (Precipitation deoxidation and diffusion deoxidation). At the same time, ferrosilicon can also be used as an alloying element additive and is widely used in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel. Ferrosilicon is often used as a reducing agent in ferroalloy production and chemical industry.
2. Except for boiled steel and semi-killed steel, the silicon content in steel should not be less than 0.10%. Silicon does not form carbides in steel, but exists in solid solution in ferrite and austenite. Silicon has a strong effect on improving the strength of the solid solution in steel and the cold working deformation hardening rate, but reduces the toughness and plasticity of the steel; it has a moderate effect on the hardenability of the steel, but it can improve the tempering stability and oxidation resistance of the steel, so silicon Iron is used as an alloying agent in the steelmaking industry.
3. Ferrosilicon, which contains about 90% of silicon, is mainly used to produce low-iron alloys, and is also used to produce silicone and highly active mineral silicic acid activators; crystalline silicon is used in the production of non-iron-based alloys and high-purity alloys, and is also used in the electronics industry important raw materials. Silicon also has the characteristics of large specific resistance, poor thermal conductivity and strong magnetic conductivity. Steel contains a certain amount of silicon, which can improve the magnetic permeability of steel, reduce hysteresis loss, and reduce eddy current loss. Electrical steel contains 2% to 3% Si, but requires low titanium and boron content. Adding silicon to cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite. Silicon-magnesia iron is a commonly used spheroidizing agent. Ferrosilicon containing barium, zirconium, strontium, bismuth, manganese, rare earths, etc. is used as an inoculant in cast iron production.
4. High-silicon ferrosilicon is a reducing agent for the production of low-carbon ferroalloys in the ferroalloy industry. Ferrosilicon powder containing about 15% silicon (particle size <0.2mm) is used as a weighting agent in heavy medium mineral processing.
