Crown ethers are a class of macrocyclic polyethers. Since the structure of the first synthesized cyclic polyether resembles a Western crown, it is called crown ether. For example, 12-crown ether is a single heterocrown ether. An important characteristic of crown ethers is the formation of complexes with metal cations. Crown ethers can also be prepared by the A.W. Williamson reaction. It is often used as a phase transfer catalyst in organic synthesis.
