(1S,4R)-4-Amino-2-cyclopentene-1-carboxylic acid methyl ester L-tartrate is a blocker that binds to the beta receptors of the heart and blocks the effects of adrenaline. It also has been shown to decrease heart rate and blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

This drug can be administered orally or intravenously, but has little effect on diastolic pressure. The binding site for this drug is within the anionic region of the receptor. (1S,4R)-4-Amino-2-cyclopentene-1-carboxylic acid methyl ester L-tartrate is a metoprolol prodrug that is hydrolyzed by erythrocyte esterases to form metoprolol which then binds to beta receptors in cardiac tissue.

(1S,4R)-4-Amino-2-cyclopentene-1-carboxylic Acid Methyl Ester is an intermediate used in the synthesis of peramivir, a neuraminidase inhibitor developed as an antiviral agent for the treatment of influenza.
