4-Formylbenzenesulfonamide is a chalcone that inhibits the production of inflammatory prostaglandins. It has been shown to inhibit both cyclooxygenases, COX-1 and COX-2, as well as other oxidases such as xanthine oxidase and lipoxygenases. 4-Formylbenzenesulfonamide also binds to mitochondria, where it inhibits electron transport.

This may be due to its ability to act as a fluorescence probe for mitochondria. 4-Formylbenzenesulfonamide is also able to form conjugates with glutathione or glucuronide, which are then excreted in urine. This compound can be used in fluorescent probes for mitochondria.

4-Desaminomethyl 4-Formylmafenide is an impurity in the synthesis of Mafenide, an antibacterial.
