2,3-Dihydrobenzofuran is a chemical that is used as an industrial solvent. It is synthesized by the reaction of ethyl chloroformate and borohydride, followed by the addition of acetonitrile. The product is then tosylated with carboxylic acid and basified with chloroformate. Decarboxylation of the carboxylic acid results in 5-(2-bromoethyl)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran. This compound can also be synthesized from 2-chlorobenzaldehyde and sodium borohydride in chloroformate. The final product can be isolated using chlorination or sodium borohydride.
