1,7-Phenanthroline is a molecule that has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in vitro. The inhibition activity of 1,7-phenanthroline is due to its ability to bind the electron-transport system of the DNA polymerase and prevent the removal of electrons from the aromatic ring.

This binding converts 1,7-phenanthroline into a low energy state that is not able to release any energy. This prevents the formation of a hydrogen bond between 1,7-phenanthroline and DNA bases or nucleotides.
