Validamycin A is a natural product that has significant cytotoxicity against wild-type strains of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It also has an inhibitory effect on human macrophages and detoxification enzymes, such as glutathione reductase and cytochrome P450.

Validamycin A binds to cell nuclei and can be detected at low concentrations. The synergic effects of this compound with chemical pesticides have been shown to be effective in the bacterial strain Pseudomonas putida. Validamycin A is broken down by the enzyme carbonate dehydratase and sodium carbonate, which are found in plants or animals.

Validamycin is an antibiotic and fungicide produced by Streptomyces hygroscopicus. It is used as an inhibitor of trehalase. It is used for the control of sheath blight of rice and damping-off of cucumbers.
