Pharmacological effects of isomers Meropenem is a synthetic broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic that produces antibacterial effects by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. Meropenem easily penetrates the cell walls of most Gram-positive and -negative bacteria and reaches its Target penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). In addition to metallo-β-lactamases, it has strong stability against the hydrolysis of most β-lactamases (including penicillinase and cephalosporinase produced by Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria) . Meropenem should not be used to treat methicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections and sometimes shows cross-resistance to other carbapenem-resistant strains. In vitro experiments have shown that the combination of meropenem and aminoglycoside antibiotics can produce a synergistic effect on some Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates.
