Introduction and application of Polyethylene Naphthalate (PEN)
Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) is an important member of the polyester family. It is a polymer with excellent performance, which is formed by the polycondensation of 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid (NDC) or 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester (DMN) and ethylene glycol (EG). The chemical structure of PEN is similar to that of PET, except that the naphthalene ring in the molecular chain of PEN replaces the benzene ring in PET with a more rigid naphthalene ring. The naphthalene ring structure makes PEN have higher physical and mechanical properties, gas barrier properties, chemical stability, heat resistance, UV resistance, radiation resistance and other properties than PET. Therefore, as a thermoplastic resin, PEN has a very broad application prospect in the fields of fibers, films, packaging materials and engineering plastics.
