Dioctyl terephthalate is a polyester that is used in the production of polyvinyl chloride. It has been shown to have an adverse effect on the glomerular filtration rate, which can lead to renal impairment, and may be toxic for humans. Dioctyl terephthalate does not readily dissolve in water and is resistant to degradation by bacteria or fungi. Dioctyl terephthalate has been found in wastewater and can be removed by wastewater treatment plants, although it leaves behind other hazardous substances such as phthalates. The molecular structure of dioctyl terephthalate has been studied using computational methods such as molecular docking analysis and dispersive solid-phase extraction.
