Octadecyl vinyl ether is a nonpolar solvent that is used as a reaction medium, viscosity modifier, and carrier solvent. It is also a cross-linking agent for pharmaceutical preparations, particularly those that are sensitive to water. Octadecyl vinyl ether has been shown to react with hydrochloric acid to form octadecyl chloride, which is used in the production of cationic polymers. The reaction product of octadelc vinyl ether and vinyl chloride can be polymerized using radiation to form polyvinyl ethers. This chemical also reacts with monocarboxylic acids such as acetyl chloride or acetic anhydride to form bioconjugates.
