Europium trichloride, also known as europium (III) chloride and europium chloride (chemical formula: EuCl3), is the chloride of the rare earth metal europium (III). Europium chloride is a yellow solid that decomposes to form europium (II) chloride (EuCl2) when it is lower than or equal to the melting point. It has strong water absorption. When anhydrous is exposed to humid air, it will quickly absorb water and transform into white crystalline hexahydrate (EuCl3??6H2O). It is soluble in water, and anhydrous is easily soluble in ethanol (similar to SmCl3). Europium (III) chloride has a UCl3 structure and contains nine coordinated europium atoms.
