Ethyl (S)-3-hydroxybutyrate is an enantiomer of 3-hydroxybutyric acid. It can be synthesized by the asymmetric synthesis of calcium carbonate, which is a precursor for the production of other chemicals such as pharmaceuticals and biochemicals. The process was optimized to achieve high yields and high resistance to isooctane. (S)-3-Hydroxy-butyric acid ethyl ester has been shown to have strong odorant receptor activity in immobilized cells, leading to a high level of expression.
