4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile is a liquid with an adiabatic index of 1.0, which means it has a high degree of thermal stability. It melts at -6.1°C and is mesophase under ambient conditions. The nematic phase is observed at temperatures between 0°C and -6°C, while the smectic phase is observed over a temperature range from -6°C to -12°C. 4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile has been found to undergo a transition from the isotropic liquid state to the nematic state at a critical temperature of 16°C. The enthalpy and entropy for this transition are 12.7 kJ/mol and 3.2 J/(K mol), respectively, as measured in a calorimeter and using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation.
