Determination of Bromoxynil Octanoate in Soil and Corn
Bromoxynil octanoate is used in the analysis of soil, corn leaves, and corn seeds. The compound is detected using one-step liquid-liquid extraction and partitioning, followed by Gas Chromatography (GC) with electron capture (ECD) and mass spectrometry (MS) detection .The recoveries for GC-ECD and GC/MS were 82.3-110.7% with a relative standard deviation of <14% using matrix-matched calibration solutions for quantification. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) values were 0.005 and 0.2 mg/kg for the ECD and MS detector, respectively, depending on the sensitivity of the target compound .
Use as a Herbicide
Bromoxynil octanoate is widely used as a post-emergence herbicide. It has a low aqueous solubility and a low volatility. There is a low potential for leaching to groundwater based on its chemical properties .It is not expected to be persistent in soil or water systems. It is moderately toxic via the oral route to mammals, is an endocrine disrupting chemical and a skin sensitiser. It is highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates but less so to other aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity .
