Hyodeoxycholic acid is a bile acid that is used to treat bowel disease. It is also used in the production of nanoparticulate compositions for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic lesions. Hyodeoxycholic acid has been shown to have neurotrophic effects, which are due to its ability to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis. This compound binds to cell surface receptors, inducing transcriptional activation via protein kinase C and phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2. Hyodeoxycholic acid has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of myeloma cells in culture by binding with DNA. The fluorescence probe 5-aminofluorescein-diacetate (DAF-2DA) can be used as an analytical tool for hyodeoxycholic acid quantification.
